Azerbaijan - Ladies Bridal shoe - with leather panel decoration - Early 20th C

Azerbaijani culture has developed as a result of many influences, including its Turkic, Persian, Islamic and Caucasus heritage as well as Russian influences due to its former status as a Soviet republic. The folk dances of the Azerbaijani people are old and extremely melodious. They are performed at formal celebrations and the dancers wear festival clothes or Chokha cloaks. Asma Kasma is one of the oldest Azerbaijani dances which is performed when the bride is escorted to the bridegroom's home and women dance in the opposite of the bride. Above shoes are worn during that occasion. The cloth covered leather upper is beautifully decorated with tiny, carefully cutted out leather pieces.
